There’s so much to see and do on the North Shore, that sometimes we lose focus about what is just beyond our doors! We know that you drive a fair distance to visit us, so we’d like to help limit your car time while you’re here. Read on for our list of trails and outdoor experiences that help you make the most of your time with us. Summer is here…and It’s time to get outside, and explore more.

Cove Point Trail
Follow the path leading into the forest next to our campfire area to access our cove, and to make your way to the trail leading out to The Point. Follow the shoreline until you reach very large rocks on your left. From there, veer to the right, and follow the trail as it swings to the left to reach other small cove. Carefully wend your way amongst the rocks to reach more even footing again, and follow the path to the end of the point, stopping to enjoy the scenery along the way.

Cove Point Loop
The Cove Point Loop  is a 6 mile hike with a shorter 1 mile option beginning at front door.  Walk up our driveway, and keep an eye out for the Superior Hiking Trail sign on the left, just before our seasonal waterfall. Follow the trail towards the highway, and cross the highway. Head up the dirt road and within a few feet you will see the Cove Point Spur Trail on your right.

Follow the spur trail until you come back to the dirt road. Cross over the dirt road and take the NSCCo Centrum Spar until you come back out at the dirt road again at the top of the hill near the radio tower. At this point, if you walk down the dirt road back to the lodge you will complete a mile loop.

To continue on the full 6 mile loop, cross the dirt road to access The Superior Hiking Trail, and follow the signs for the Cove Point Loop. You will eventually arrive back at this same spot – take the dirt road back down to the highway to complete the full loop. The Cove Point Loop can be steep and rocky in areas, and generally takes hikers between 4 and 6 hours.

The Superior Hiking Trail – Split Rock Ridge
Walk up our driveway, and keep an eye out for the Superior Hiking Trail sign on the left, just before our seasonal waterfall. Follow the trail towards the highway, and cross the highway. Head up the dirt road and within a few feet you will see the Cove Point Spur Trail on your right.

Follow the spur trail until you come back to the dirt road. Cross over the dirt road and take the NSCCo Centrum Spar until you come back out at the dirt road again at the top of the hill near the radio tower. Cross the dirt Road to cross to access the Superior Hiking Trail.

Follow the signs for Split Rock State Park and enjoy panoramic views high above Lake Superior. This loop is more than most folks will want to handle in one day, but an out and back hike that you’re comfortable with is a great way to experience this section of the trail.

Gitchi-Gami Bike Trail
A favorite for cyclists and pedestrians, the paved Gitchi-Gami Bike Trail is can be accessed from our driveway! Walk to Beaver Bay and the Beaver River Falls and Beach, and browse through our local shops along the way. In the opposite direction, Split Rock Lighthouse is a 30 minute ride by bike, and you can get yourself to Gooseberry Falls State Park in just over an hour.

Beaver River Falls
Guests can reach two of Beaver River’s waterfalls on foot from Cove Point Lodge. Follow the Gitchi-Gami bike trail for 1/2 mile to enjoy the Beaver River Falls just before the river reaches Lake Superior. The beach here is a favorite of early morning fisherman and agate hunters.

To reach the South Beaver River Falls via the Superior Hiking, continue along the bike path as it veers left away from the highway along West Road. Just before reaching a railroad underpass. the Superior Hiking Trail will be on your left. Keep an eye out for blue paint on the rocks.

Continue about 1 mile through birch and pine forests to view the falls at South Beaver River Camp. Bring a lunch, and
explore along the river and falls. Return to Cove Point Lodge via the same route.
