If there’s one place in Minnesota that was made for fall, it might be the North Shore.

The road follows Lake Superior. Forested hills rise from the shoreline. Waterfalls cut through granite and birch forests. State parks stretch along the coast. And when autumn arrives, the landscape becomes a moving palette of red, orange, gold and green.

This is the season for scenic drives with nowhere you need to be. For pulling over because the view is too good to pass. For hiking a trail just to see what’s around the next corner.

And Cove Point Lodge puts you in the heart of it.

Located on the North Shore near Beaver Bay, Cove Point Lodge is an ideal base for exploring fall color, hiking trails, waterfalls, state parks and the spectacular Lake Superior shoreline.

The North Shore Has More Than One Fall Color Season

One of the secrets to planning a fall trip to the North Shore is knowing that the color doesn’t arrive everywhere at exactly the same time.

Higher elevations and inland forests can begin showing fall color earlier, while the shoreline forests of birch and aspen often reach their best color later. That means the North Shore can offer an extended fall-color season rather than one single weekend of peak foliage.

So don’t worry if you can’t make it on the exact “peak” weekend.

There’s a good reason to explore throughout the season.

And wherever you find the color, Cove Point Lodge gives you a beautiful place to return to at the end of the day.

Start With the Scenic Drive

Highway 61 is more than a road to the North Shore. It’s part of the adventure.

Head north from Cove Point Lodge and you’ll find opportunities to stop at state parks, overlooks, trailheads, waterfalls and small North Shore communities. Head south and you’ll find more shoreline scenery, forests and access to iconic destinations like Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse.

Give yourself permission to take your time.

Pull over. Take the short trail. Walk down to the lake. Stop for coffee. Photograph the trees. Find a waterfall.

The best North Shore fall adventures aren’t always the ones you planned.

Find the Epic Views

Fall on the North Shore is a game of elevation.

Climb above the shoreline and suddenly the landscape opens up. Lake Superior stretches to the horizon while the forests below become a patchwork of autumn color.

The Superior Hiking Trail offers hundreds of miles of opportunities to experience this landscape, including sections accessible from near Cove Point Lodge. The Cove Point Loop and nearby Split Rock Ridge trails offer opportunities to experience the forest and elevated Lake Superior views without driving far from the lodge.

For an especially memorable day, tackle the Bean and Bear Loop, where rocky ridges provide expansive views of Lake Superior and the surrounding fall landscape.

You don’t have to be an expert hiker to enjoy the North Shore, either. Choose a trail that matches your ability, take your time and let the scenery do the work.

Add a Waterfall—or Three

Fall color reflected around rushing water is one of the North Shore’s signature sights.

Gooseberry Falls is an obvious favorite, with multiple waterfalls along the Gooseberry River and trails leading toward Lake Superior.

Split Rock Falls offers another beautiful stop, with a 20-foot waterfall tucked into the forest along the Superior Hiking Trail.

And at Tettegouche State Park, you can combine waterfalls with some of the North Shore’s most dramatic scenery. The park has trails for different abilities, including routes leading toward waterfalls, rocky overlooks and the Baptism River.

If waterfalls are your thing, make them part of your North Shore fall itinerary. The Minnesota DNR has even created a dedicated North Shore waterfall itinerary featuring several of the region’s best stops.

Spend a Day in the State Parks

The North Shore’s state parks are some of the best places to experience fall in Minnesota.

Explore the trails at Gooseberry Falls. Hike the dramatic landscape of Tettegouche. Wander the shoreline near Split Rock Lighthouse. Head farther north for even more rugged scenery.

Each park offers something different, but they all share one thing: an incredible combination of Lake Superior and northern forest.

And in autumn, that combination is at its best.

Leave Time to Wander

The best fall trip isn’t necessarily the one with the most stops.

Leave room for the unexpected.

A trailhead you didn’t know about. A quiet stretch of shoreline. A roadside overlook. A waterfall tucked just beyond the road. A perfect afternoon when the lake is calm and the trees are glowing.

That’s the beauty of the North Shore.

You can build a detailed itinerary, but you should always leave space to wander.

Come Back to Cove Point Lodge

After a day exploring the North Shore, come back to Cove Point Lodge and slow things down.

Walk the grounds. Explore the cove. Gather around the fire. Enjoy dinner. Watch the lake. Settle in for the evening.

Then wake up and do it all again.

Because the best way to experience fall on Minnesota’s North Shore isn’t to rush through it.

It’s to stay awhile.

Cove Point Lodge is your home base for fall hikes, waterfalls, state parks, scenic drives and unforgettable Lake Superior views.

Come chase the colors. We’ll be here when you get back.
