One of the best things about staying at Cove Point Lodge in the spring? You’re surrounded by some of the North Shore’s most spectacular waterfalls — all just a short drive away. Not just one or two, but five absolute stunners, each with its own personality, and all easily reachable in about 30 minutes or less from your cozy room or lakeside cottage.
Here’s your guide to a waterfall-hopping adventure:
Gooseberry Falls: Just 12 minutes south of the lodge, Gooseberry is the legend. The icon. The one you’ve seen on postcards and Instagram a thousand times, but trust us, it’s even better up close. Gooseberry isn’t just one waterfall — it’s a whole series of wide, tumbling drops. The trails are easy, the views are huge, and the sound of the rushing water? Pure magic.

High Falls at Tettegouche: About 15 minutes north, you’ll find Minnesota’s tallest waterfall. The Baptism River leaps off a cliff, plunging nearly 70 feet in a spray of mist and thunder. The hike is beautiful, and the view at the end is one you’ll remember long after your trip.

Illgen Falls: Just under 15 minutes north from Cove Point Lodge, Illgen Falls is a quick walk from the road, but it feels hidden and wild. The river squeezes through a narrow chute before dropping with impressive force — perfect for those who love their waterfalls up close and dramatic.

Caribou Falls: Caribou is a photographer’s dream, and only about a 20–25 minute drive north. The trail is lush and green, with the sound of the river guiding you in, and the falls tumble into a rock-walled pool that looks straight out of a storybook.

Temperance River Falls: About 30 minutes north, Temperance River Falls brings the drama. Water carves its way through ancient volcanic rock, crashing and swirling through a deep gorge before bursting into daylight. The trails here let you peek over dizzying drops, and the whole place feels wild and untamed — perfect for a little adrenaline with your scenery.
That’s five breathtaking waterfalls, all within a half-hour of Cove Point Lodge. Make it a day trip and see them all, or spread out your visits and savor the adventure at your own pace.
And the best part? When you’re done exploring, you get to come back to the comfort of Cove Point Lodge — where a crackling fire, a hot meal, and Lake Superior views are waiting for you. And tomorrow, who knows? There might be our very own waterfall, just up the road! Get in here in the spring to watch it flow!
