Geocahing, Frisbee Golf And The Lake
|
|
Geocaching is a treasure hunt using your GPS. We have placed a couple of hidden treasure boxes on the lodge property and we are in close proximity to several treasure boxes in the area. We will give you the coordinates and you put them into your GPS and take off for a fun adventure in the wooods.
We have also modified and improved our frisbee golf course. The course features several new holes located in the woods. One of the holes appears to be a simple par 3. However, the hole basket hugs the ridge and if you play the hole wrong the frisbee will sail past the hole and into a very difficult valley. Cove Point Lodge is a leader in providing soft sports and quiet trails. Places to explore, and relax. Join us for a round of frisbee golf.
Lake Superior water is rising. After a prolonged dry spell last year, Lake Superior has risen almost 10 inches so far this year. Two weeks ago we had waves along the point estimated at 14-18 feet high. They waves were so wild that it was like a constant stream of thunder in the main lodge. And now the kayak and canoes are ready to go.

It Takes A Village
|
|
Early images of Spring are starting to find their way to the North Shore. And the early images of our newest activity called Fjord Village is also visible. Through the coldest winter in seven years, we have been building fifteen new cottages and the cottages will start to become available by June.
The design, views, and features of these cottages are unique and cozy. The design reflects the feel of the lodge, yet the cottages are set in the woods along the lake and they have a real sense of community. The early buyers of the cottages have all met and discussed their new adventure and they are excited to move in.

EARLY SNOW
|
|
The first snow arrived on November 28 with about 4 inches of the white stuff. Then on December 1 we were blessed with another 12-14 inches. The entire North Shore is filled with a very generous snow.
Last year we did not get any measurable snow until March-much too late for our guests to enjoy a beautiful North Shore winter.
The lodge is decorated for the holiday, the hot chocolate is always available, and the fire place in the lobby is as cozy as ever.
It's going to be a wonder filled winter.

Always Something New

Cottage Rating System Created
Have you ever gone on vacation and been disappointed because the brochure and the actual resort seemed different? You ended up going to a place where the photos in the brochure and the actual resort did not match, and you were disappointed.
At Cove Point Lodge we want our guests to be pleased that the accommodations they reserved match with their expectations. In the past we have tried to accomplish this in many ways. First, all of our photos on the web site and in the brochure are real, and they are photos that you can experience. In other words we do not use photos from 5,000 ft in the air, or photos taken down the road somewhere. Second, we provide floor plans so you can see how your accommodations are designed. Yet, in our opinion, you deserve more.
Now we have added new and exciting information for our guests looking for a cottage. We call this our cottage rating system. We know that what cottages look and feel like on the inside is important. But because all of our cottage are unique, we also know that folks like you also interested in things like privacy and location. Therefore, we have rated every cottage on four dimensions including lake view, privacy, proximity to the lake and proximity to the lodge. Everyone is different. Some want to be close to the lodge and others want as much privacy as possible. Now, for the first time, you will have that information as you book your accommodations. When you are booking your reservations, look in the cottage description and you will see the ratings for each of the items indicated above.
Construction At Fjord Village Is Underway
Everyone has heard about the real estate crisis, so it might seem like an odd time to start construction on a group of homes offered for sale next to the lodge. In fact, we believe this is the perfect time to offer cozy homes at a great value. We are under construction on a total of 15 cottages. The reason we are excited about this new enclave is because we have a project with low density, great floor plans and we are offering the cottages at values that are 20-30% below other properties in the area. This is probably why we have already sold 7 of the 15 cottages. The homes will be available for occupancy in late may of 2008.
Snowshoe And Disc Golf
Along with the construction of Fjord Village, we will establish a more formal and unique area for snowshoeing in the winter and disc golf in the summer. We have acquired additional land and in 2008 we will open a dramatic and fun 9 hole disc golf course. At the same time, we will create a snowshoe area that will give our guests a better opportunity to experience this great sport.
Water, Water, Water—And The Gales Of November Are Here.
We have all watched the level of Lake Superior diminish over the last 18 months. But all of that changed in September with the rain that has continued into October. The rivers are flowing, the lake is up and we are getting ready for the November storms. A great time to visit the lodge.
Have a wonderful fall season.

Always Something With The Lake
|
|
Lake Superior is down this year. What does that mean? At the lodge it means that we have picked up about an extra foot of 'beach.' Not a big deal.
But in the harbor of Duluth/Superior it means that cargo ships are at some risk and therefore they now carry less cargo so that the ship can ride higher on the water.
And at Isle Royale National Park, the public ferry transportation system has been cancelled due to the dangerous conditions and shallow areas around the various harbors on the island.

Gunflint Trail Fire
|
|
The Gunflint Trail is located more than 3 hours away from us. At this moment, fire continues to rage in the wilderness along this trail. One of the Icons of the lodging business is the Gunflint Lodge and it was built and is still owned today by the Kerfoot family. The resort, along with other folks in the area have been evacuated.
A fire was started about a week ago, and the fire has spread into Canada and surrounding areas. At this time the Gunflint Lodge is safe, but tomorrow anything could happen.
The Cove Point Lodge family extends our thoughts and concerns to the Kerfoot family as they battle this fire. We know they are strong and the entire lodging community is thinking about them tonight.
Once the fire has passed, we will be in touch with the family to extend our concerns and offer what ever help they require.

Fjord Village Progress
|
|
Fjord Village is the new sanctuary of fifteen cottages that will be available in 2008. Each cottage will be privately owned. On April 10th we obtained approval to build the cottages. By April 12th, we had our first purchase agreement and by May 10th we had six purchase agreements signed. While the rest of the real estate market is in a slump, folks are excited to buy at Fjord Village.
We have made one significant change to the project. The Northwoods cottage will have a loft that will be standard on all five of these cottages. This will mean that the Northwoods cottage will be over 1,300 square feet. We are also re-designing the bedroom with the spa. Plans will be available in June.
This project also includes plans to build a new spa. We have hired some of the top experts from around the United States to help with the design of our facility that will feature massage, facials, quiet lounges and aroma therapy steam rooms.

ICEBERGS!!
|
|
Last week the winds blew at 60 miles per hours, the ice sheet moved, and huge sheets of ice stacked up in the cove. We estimate the waves and ice heaving at up to 16 feet.
Now, the cove is filled with an enormous iceberg that in places is over 18 feet tall. The iceberg is the size of a football field. It could break away anytime, or it could be here in May.
On Monday, a few people were standing on an ice shelf up the shore from Cove Point Lodge and the shelf broke away from the shore, and the people started to float out to sea.
The local rescue team was called, everyone is now safe.
