Smore’s! A few nights ago we had an interesting crowd at the campfire. The people from Texas were here to escape the heat in the deep South, the couple from Colorado were here on a honeymoon, and most others were regulars. Except for the people from the Middle Eastern country of Jordan. The Jordan folks had never seen a marsh mellow, much less a smore. Their eyes got real big when someone put a marsh mellow on a stick and roasted it in the fire. But what was so cool was when the folks from Texas, sat down with our international guests and explained the smore concept and helped them roast the marsh mellow, get out the chocolate and get everything packed between the two graham crackers. At first the new friends were skeptical, but after the first bite the smiled and everyone laughed. It was just a little more difficult for anyone to help with the gooey fingers problem, but that just created even more conversation. Who would have thought that the Cove Point campfire would be the focus of improved international relations? People are discovering the shore once again. When they get here, they realize that they can park the car and just walk or bike for miles and miles, without ever having to get on a road or dangerous highway. The forest is endless, the trails are long and the views around the corner are spectacular. If you are on your way up the shore, keep the camera handy just North of Gooseberry Falls State Park as you have a reasonable chance of seeing a wolf, deer or bear. Summer is in full swing and the cool nights and clear days are awesome. We have more bike riders than ever before, the Frisbee golf course is busy, the canoes are out, the campfire is great and our guests are on the trails.
